Returning to Adelaide he followed different trades till about 1880, when the advance of old age compelled him to retire from active work. He leaves a family of eight—four sons and four daughters. The sons are :— Mr. Peter Peterson, Manager of Mr. T. Beaumont's station, Campbellhouse, on Lake Alexandria ; Mr. A. Peterson, a farmer of this colony; and Messrs. Mrs. Jessie White Phelps, who died at West Croydon on November 16, at the age of 92 years, had resided in South Australia for 88 years. A daughter of Mr. Sommerville, she arrived from England in the PrinceRegent with her parents. For some months they lived in a tent, and then had a house built near the Torrens. In 1852 her father went to the Victorian gold diggings, and the last the family heard of him was by a letter intimating that he and a mate were returning with a quantity of gold. The daughter was married at the age of 22 years to Mr. John Phelpe, who had been a sailor during the Crimean War, and they went to live at One Tree Hill. In 1874 they took a dairy farm at Nairne, and from there they removed to Kadina. The husband died many years ago. Mrs. Phelps, who enjoyed comparatively good health until recently, attended the Commemoration Day celebrations, and found much pleasure in recounting stories of the early days of settlement. There survive three sons-- Messrs. J., M., and W. J. Phelps—and four daughters—Mesdames R. Bowering, H. French, G. Hooper, and F. Harwood-- of Adelaide. There are also 31 grand children, and 45 great grandchildren. A Brother, Mr. James Sommerville (Houghton), aged 86 years, and two sisters, Mesdames G. Williams (Weyville), aged 80 years, and E. Dean (Victoria), aged 85 years, are still living.
