LEA, Caroline nee WHITMORE
Mr. and Mrs. George Lea were residents of Birmingham (England), who left their quiet English home to come out to South Australia in 1839, three years after the colony's foundation. They soiled in the Lady Lilford, with a little girl, aged three years and a half. During the voyage out, a baby son was born to the young mother, who was named John Lilford (after the vessel in which he was born). Mr. and Mrs. Lea had a sorrowful arrival in South Australia, for soon after they landed, on September 25, 1839, their baby, born at sea, died. Their first home was in Immigration square, and then, as Mrs. Lea described it, in a "dugout" in George street, Thebarton. A daughter, Mrs. S. Lander, was born there 92 years ago, and she still lives on the spot. Mrs. Lea had two sons and three daughters. She was "of a lively disposition" as the phrase of the day had it, and was an enthusiastic worker for charity. In September, 1892, she died, aged 84 and was buried on the fifty-third anniversary of her arrival in the State, in the Hindmarsh Cemetery. Her husband was a cabinet maker, who claimed that he was the first to import glass windows into South Australia.
