On Saturday, a nonagenarian, Mr. James Creasy, who had resided at Glenelg for the past 10 years, died at his residence,Flagstaff House, East terrace, Glenelg. The late Mr. Creasy was born at Dingley Hall, Norfolk (England), in 1828, and on leaving school went to Market Harborough, Leicestershire, where he entered the brewing and wine and spirit business. In 1848 he came to South Australia in the ship Derwent. He narrowly escaped death when bathing while the ship was becalmed off Cape de Verde Islands, for sharks surrounded him in the water, and later there was a fire onboard the ship. On arriving in the province he went to Port Lincoln, and on returning to Adelaide entered the service of the late Mr. George Fife Angas, as storekeeper, on his station at Angaston. In 1852 the return from Bendigo of a friend who had "struck it rich" on the goldfields impelled Mr. Creasy to seek his fortune likewise. He joined another Adelaide man in working a claim which proved to have a rich streak. "The gold was in nuggets in a clay vein," he told a reporter a few years ago, "and we picked out the nuggets until the work became almost monotonous." Mr. Creasy said that just before he went to Victoria he purchased the block of land at the corner of King William street and Currie street, now occupied by the Bank of Australasia. The price was £75, and he paid a deposit of £10. Upon the town being denuded of male population by the rush to the diggings, however, he thought the speculation a bad one, and forfeited his deposit. Mr. Creasy left Bendigo, after a comparatively short stay, £1,000 richer by his visit. For some time he lived in Melbourne, "then a nest of thieves and desperadoes." Twice he was in danger of being robbed by highwaymen, but each time was saved by the appearance of the police. Big robberies were common occurrences. Mr. Creasy recalled the robbery from, the ship of the first consignment or gold from Victoria which was to be sent to England. He saw the gold being taken from the Treasury to the vessel, and told how the thieves, with muffled oars, rowed to the ship, overawed the crew while the officers were being entertained on shore, and secured thousands of pounds' worth of gold. Later he saw two of the gang in the hands of the police. On another occasion the window of a gold-buyer's shop was smashed and a large vase full of gold was stolen, in a busy Melbourne street under the very noses of the police. Mr. Creasy returned to Adelaide in 1855. He settled in Clare, where he built a general store and went into business, and subsequently planted a vineyard and orchard, which he brought to a state of great perfection. In 1879 he paid a visit to his aged father in England, and after travelling on the Continent returned to South Australia. At a later date he combined sheep and wheat farming on land at Lower Broughton, but he suffered so much as a result of droughts that he decided to confine his attention to vine culture, and again went to the Clare district, where he increased his acreage. He ultimately retired and settled at Glenelg. In 1850 he married Miss Ann Whitfield, a London lady. His sons are:—Mr. James Edward Creasy (Port Pirie), Messrs. William and Robert Creasy (vignerons, Clare) and Mr. John S. Creasy (Burnside). His two daughters are:—Mrs. Harriet Dack (Clare) and Mrs. Sarah Hancock (Prospect).
