CALTON, Charles Died 11 October 1862 at Kadina, SA aged 54 years Charles was born c1808 in England and had resided at Adelaide, Port Adelaide, and Brighton. His occupations were of a Farmer and Publican. Charles Calton, took up a block of land in Hindley-street, where he subsequently built the hotel, naming it 'Royal Admiral' after the vessel which brought him to Australia. Charles Calton of the " Royal Admiral," Hindley-street, appeared to three summonses issued against him on the information of the Collector, Andrew John Murray, for refusing to pay the assessment, amounting to £2 16s 9d, tinder the Colonial Ordinance, 1346, No. 15 , for the repairing the streets. Mr Calton assured the Court he appeared there with no factious views, and had refused to pay the amount merely to expose the gross injustice he was subject to, and to point out the very improper way the Act was attempted to be carried out—that the Collector, being aware of his intentions, might have saved the unnecessary expense of two extra summonses. In answer to the Court, the defendant stated he was willing to pay it, and immediately carried the same into execution by handing over the amount without costs.
