BRIDGART, John Thomas 25 August 1829 - 17 May 1905
John Thomas Bridgart born 25th August 1829 Derby Derbyshire England and baptised on the 9th of December 1848, Derby Derbyshire England. Arrived Port Adelaide 21st November 1949 on the ship the Ascendant. He was the son of Thomas Bridgart (baptised 11th October 1794 Derby Derbyshire England) and Mary Bridgart (nee Smith). John Thomas Bridgart’s father, Thomas Bridgart was a master plasterer of a family in the building industry/contractors in Derby Derbyshire England. Thomas’s brother (George Bridgart) was the contractor who built Beaumanor Hall in Leicester England amongst many other churches. John Thomas Bridgart was a carpenter by trade and may have met his future wife Emma Jane Spurr through his future wife’s father, Richard Spurr who was a master cabinet maker and a well known charterist in Cornwall England. John Thomas Bridgart married Emma Jane Spurr on the 19th of August 1852. Initially John Thomas Bridgart tried his luck as a farmer, but lost his crops and animals. He initially purchased property under the name Thomas Bridgart instead of John Thomas Bridgart, as John’s uncle with the same christian name arrived in Port Adelaide on the ship the Salacia 12 months after him on the 25th of November 1850. His uncle’s ship’s passenger record was under the spelling “Bridget” with his wife Martha. His uncle mortgaged 14 (fourteen) of his houses he owned in Derby Derbyshire England and followed his nephew to Australia (as evidenced by copies of letters. John Thomas Bridgart moved back to Adelaide after his crops failed and took up residence in Bowden and worked in the building industry again. He and his family must have fallen on hard times as he was caught sweating coins and was sentenced to prison for his crime. His sentence was reduced and he was released early as he was a person of good character who had fallen on hard times. He took up work in the building industry again and eventually moved to Hardy Street Goodwood and worked in the building industry. Three of his sons, John Thomas Bridgart Jnr, George Bridgart and youngest son Alfred Charles Bridgart followed their father into the building industry. John Thomas Bridgart died on the 17th of May 1905 age 75 years old leaving his wife Emma Jane Bridgart a widow. Emma Jane Bridgart died on the 17th of August 1919 . John Thomas Bridgart’s Great uncle (Thomas Bridgart BORN 1766) was a well known Silk Manufactuer in Derby Derbyshire England. Thomas Bridgart was basptised Thomas Bridgart, but changed the spelling of his surname to “BRIDGETT”, possibly to be distinguished from the Bridgart’s who were builders. Thomas Bridgett’s Silk Manufacturing company was one of the largest factories in Derby from 1803 to 1870.
