Woodside lost a very old and highly esteemed resident on Monday when' Mr. RichardAvery, sen., died at his home, " Pitch Green Farm," at the age of 87 years. The grand old pioneer arrived in South Australia from England in the ship " Phoebe" in 1847 with his wife and elder son,'. It might be mentioned here that Mr. John Paltridge was a shipmate of deceased's. The following year he settled at Pitch Green Farm and had lived there ever since. He was therefore one of the oldest residents of one of the "oldest districts in the State. He was a fine" type of pioneer "and brought up 12 children. Up to within two 'days' of his death he had enjoyed excellent health and, his mental faculties were very alert, while physically he was active to the last. He was bom on November 25 at Aylesbury Bucks, England, 87 years ago. His wife predeceased him in 1896 and the family consisted of 14, two of whom died in infancy. The surviving twelve are Mr. William Avery, of Dimboola, Vic.; Mr. Thomas' Avery of Morchard.; Mrs. Butterworth of fitch Green Farm, who had lived with her father for the past six years and had been his constant companion; Mrs. Symes of Brookton; W.A.; Mr. Robert Avery of Cleve; Mrs. G. F. Elliot of Woodside ; Mr. John Avery of Willow Plains, Hawker; Mrs. J. H. Payne of Murdock's Hill; Mr. RichardAvery of Murdoch's Hill; Mrs. Sanders of Hawker ; Mr. Moses Avery of " Ettriek," Woodside ; and Mrs. H. Price of Cleve. His descendants also include 54 grandchildren and 5O greatgrandchildren, It is worthy of note, too, that Mr. Thomas Avery, a son, has 14 children and 25 grandchildren. - The remains of Mr. Avery were interred in the Inverbrackie church yard on Tuesday and the Rev. R. M. Turnbull officiated at the graveside. The funeral was a very large one and testified to the deceased's great popularity in the district.
