ANGEL, Ann Mrs. French, whose death was reported on January 23, was an old colonist of South Australia. She was born at Dawlish, County Devon, in 1836. and arrived at Port Adelaide in the sailing ship DavidMalcolm with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Angel, in April, 1849. after a voyage of three months. Her parents travelled by bullock dray to their first home in Adelaide, which was situated on the South road. Edwardstown, near the Avoca Hotel. They later purchased a farm at Freeling, and it was here that she met her future husband, Mr. David French, to whom she was married as St. George's Church, Gawler by Canon Coombss in 1856. The couple took up land at Eheoak Log, where they engaged in farming. Mr. French was also interested in a butchering business at Freeling. At a later date Mr. French took up land near Eudunda and Sutherlands. He died in 1899, and his widow 23 years ago decided to retire and came to Adelaide to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Moeller, of Norwood. Mrs. French was active up to the time of her death, and took a great interest in reading. There were 13 children of the marriage, 11 of whom survive her. There are also 37 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Mrs. French leaves a sister and a brother, who are respectively 92 and 90 years of age.

BUTLER Charles Mr. Charles John Butler, an old and highly respected resident of Port Adelaide, died at his residence, Torrens-road, Alberton, last week. He arrived in the colony in 1849 by the ship DavidMalcolm, and for many years he carried on the business of a bootmaker on the North-parade, Port, in partnership with his brother, the late Mr. E. H. Butler. The partnership was dissolved about five years ago, Mr. C. J. Butler remaining in business on the North-parade, and his brother taking a shop in Commercial-road. Mr. E. H. Butler died a little more than two years ago. Fail sight induced Mr. C. J. Butler to retire from business a short while since, and he removed to Torrens-road, Alberton. Like his brother he took a prominent interest in the welfare of the Port Adelaide circuit of the Wesleyan Church. He was born in March, 1828, and was therefore aged 70 years and 6 months at the time of death.

Occupation of Gardener, Viticuulturist Resided Norwood Thomas Hobby and his wife Ann lived in Hampshire before travelling to South Australia with 9 of their 10 children. Only eldest son John stayed behind. The family settled in the Kensington area, and Thomas worked for the Kensington and Norwood Corporation installing fencing, and was later paid 11 shillings a day as a carter, using his own horse and cart. The family also owned cows, which his children helped manage. Ann died only two years after arrival, when the youngest girls were only 3 and 5 years old, presumably the older sisters looked after them. 1n 1854 Thomas married again, to Mary Elizabeth Hay. Thomas gradually purchased 12 properties in Norwood, some of which he rented out. In January 1881 there was an advertisement in the paper listing Thomas’s wife as ‘missing’. After Thomas’s death at Norwood there was a court case regarding his will. He had bequeathed his properties to his children, with an annuity for his wife who was a ‘lunatic’. HOBBY, George Born c1844 - Died 16 November 1924 at Cumberland, SA Buried Payneham Cemetery Mr. George Hobby, whose death occurred recently, was a .colonist of 78 years. He was the youngest son of Mr. Thomas Hobby, of Edward street, Norwood, and sailed for Australia with his parents and three brothers and five sisters from the Isle of Wight in the ship David Malcolm, on April 6, 1849. His parents started fanning in the vicinity of Hackney. When 15 years of age Mr. Hobby entered the employ of the Norwood Corporation, and subsequently joined the railway service as a signalman, and was one of the first to wort the interlocking system. After 15 years, during which time he was promoted to foreman of the Adelaide railway yards, he began dairying operations at Magill, and later entered the service of Messrs. Henry Hill & Co. on the old Port road. Before retiring from active life he secured a garden at Mylor. He married Miss Elizabeth Earl of Devonshire, who came out on the Ship John Bartlett in 1848. She died two years ago. Mr. Hobby was a member of the Druids and Odd fellows' lodges. He leaves five sons Messrs.. W. Hobby (Mile-End), G. Hobby (Not-wood), V. Hobby (Western Australia), H. Hobby (North Norwood), and R. Hobby (Paradise)— and three daughters; Mrs. W. Benson (Norwood). Mrs. F. Wallace (Norwood), and Mrs. F. Vale (Cumberland). His sisters are Mrs. G. Barnes (Kensington) and Mis. E. Honey. (Glenelg).

OATES, Phillip Mr. Phillip Oates who passed away at his residence, Prospect, on the 25th July last at the age of 96 years, was at one time a well-known and esteemed resident of the Burra district. The deceased gentleman came to this State in the "DavidMalcolm" in 1848, in the same ship that Mr. Chas. J. Pearce's father, the late Mr. William (Tailor) Pearce, came to Australia in. Mr. Oates was also the first farmer we understand to settle in the Ironmine district, but for years past has lived a retired life at Prospect. Until within the last year or so Mr. Oates enjoyed wonderful health and was a man of a most striking personality, in fact, right up to his death he maintained a strong mentality. Messrs John Oates of Aberdeen, and Mr. Edward Oates of Kooringa, are sons.

PENGILLY, William In the death of Mr. W.Pengilly, which look place at Fullarton on Saturday last, another old colonist passed away. The deceased was born at St. Ives. Cornwall, on September 18. 1825, and arrived with his wife and one child in South Australia in the ship David Malcolm in the year 1849. On his arrival he followed his trade of stonecutter for some period. Having a good knowledge of gardening the deceased was appointed city Gardener in the Adelaide Corporation, in which service he remained for 18 years. He was passionately fond of his home and garden, and was actively connected with the Horticultural and Floricultural Society of South Australia. He was a frequent prize-taker at the exhibitions. Among the medals he received was a gold one at the hands of the late Duke of Edinburgh. The late gentleman was also an expert winemaker. He made five trips to the Victorian goldfields at the time of the rush in the early days. Shortly after arriving in South Australia the deceased took up his residence in Wattle street. Fullarton, where he resided for 61 year*. He was a member of the Independent;-,Order of Oddfellows, Manchester Unity from its inception until his death. A widow, three sons— Messrs. Wr . H. Pengilly (ex-Alderman Unley City Council: Richard. of Parkside: and Hannibal of Mitcham—and two daughters- Mrs. R. Hosking and Miss C. Pengilly—survive. There are 19 grandchildren and 16 greatgrandchildren.
