DENCH, John
Mr. John Dench, who came to thecolonyin 1839 inthe ship Moffatt, died at his residence, Holden street, Hindmarsh, at 6 o'clock on Tuesday evening, after a somewhat prolonged illness, at the age of eighty-two. Immediately on his arrival inthecolony he entered the employ of the South Australian Company as Working Manager, and he was the first to break the ground up with the plough at Brighton. After a while he went to his trade as a tanner, and in 1847 started business for himself at Hindmarsh, and succeeded in taking one of the foremost positions inthe trade. Mr. Dench took the silver medal for leather against all comers at the time when Prince Alfred visited thecolony. He was one of the first Sunday-school teachers at Trinity Church, Adelaide, and afterwards was mainly instrumental inthe building of All Saints' Church, Hindmarsh, of which he was a trustee until his death, and the establishment of the Sunday-school, the anniversary of which, it is rather singular to say, occurred on the day of his death, and was celebrated by the annual outing. He was one of the founders of the Loyal Hindmarsh Lodge, I.O.O.F., M.U., and took an active part in public matters. In 1879 he retired from business, and was banqueted and presented with an illuminated address in a casket by his employees, in which testimony was borne to his kindness as an employer and his worth as a citizen. He leaves two sons, four daughters, twenty-four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The deceased is to be interred inthe Hindmarsh Cemetery on Thursday next.
