SCOTT, David Wylie Our obituary notices record the death of Mr. David Wylie Scott at his brother's residence, Avenue-road, North Adelaide. The deceased gentleman was a very old colonist, having arrived in the colony in April, 1838, with his father, the late Mr. William Scott, of Brookside, by the ship Canton. Mr. Scott was 5 years old when he reached Adelaide, having been born in Liverpool in March, 1833. He was educated at Transmere School, near Magill, and when his education was completed entered his father's office at Port Adelaide. After remaining there for some years he went farming at Barossa, but subsequently returned to Port Adelaide, and took the editorship of the Port Adelaide News when it was started by a Company. On Mr. E. H. Derrington purchasing the paper Mr. Scott resumed farming, this time at Belalie. Of late years he has been residing near Adelaide. He took a profound interest in mining matters, and occupied himself in prospecting for gold and copper on his property near the Montacute, where recently he had his abode. He never took any very active part in public matters, but was a frequent and able contributor to the Register, and quite recently wrote several letters to this paper on the subject 'Taxation, with a view to confiscation.' He leaves a widow and one daughter, and has three brothers — one of whom (Mr. W. D. Scott) is Master of the Supreme Court— and three sisters in the colony. The deceased gentleman was very well known in the colony in which he had resided for so long, and was greatly esteemed for his up right character, amiability, and high intellectual qualities. The funeral of the late Mr. D. W. Scott took place on Monday at the West- terrace Cemetery. The remains of the late gentleman were brought from Brookside and were followed by several vehicles and mourning coaches. In the mourning coaches were two of the brothers of the deceased, Mr. W. D. Scott (Master of the Supreme Court) and Mr. Robert Scott, Brookside— besides other relatives. The service was performed by the Rev. James Lyall, who in the course of an extempore prayer referred to the simplicity, purity, uprightness, and unselfishness of the deceased. A large number of persons assembled at the graveside, including many from Port Adelaide, where the deceased spent many years of his life. Among those present were the Rev. Canon Green, Hon. A. B. Murray, Captains Ward, Underwood, and Bickers, Messrs. H. C. E. Muecke, W. R. Cave, J. Cumming, J. Scott, H. C. Fletcher, J. H. Finlayson, J. Neill, A. S. Neill, H. D. Crittenden, R. J. Rigaud, W. Isbister, W. J. Magarey, and A. Murray.
