MCKAY, Thomas Hanning
Mr. Thomas Hanning McKay, an old colonist who has resided at Hindmarsh for many years, died at his residence, Osmond street, Hindmarsh, on Sunday night, at the age of 76 years. He was born at Maxwelton, Dumfries, Scotland, May 18, 1818, and learnt the trade of a tanner. He enlisted in one of the Highland foot regiments inthe Imperial service, and his father subsequently bought him out, and offered him an interest in his drapery business, but Mr. McKay decided to leave Scotland for South Australia, and arrived here intheFairfieldinMay, 1839. He joined Mr Nixon's survey party shortly after his arrival, and assisted inthe surveys at various parts of this colony. He was married to a daughter of the late Mr. D. McFarline at Trinity Church by the Rev. Mr. Howard in September, 1842, and she died in August 1892. Mr. McKay started the first tannery in what was then known as the township of Hindmarsh, which later on he sold to the late Mr. John Dench. He next purchased Summerhill, at Golden Grove, and engaged in agricultural pursuits, dairy farming, and viticulture. Leaving that locality, after being there seven years, he took up his residence on the Thebarton side of the Torrens River, near Hindmarsh-bridge, and established there a tannery, which be conducted for a number of years. Adverse circumstances overtook him, and relinquishing this business he removed to Osmond-street, Hindmarsh, where he lived for many years. He leaves four sons, Messrs. William, Thomas, Joseph, and James McKay, two daughters, Mrs. J. Canon and Mrs. T. Halliday, twenty grandchildren and one great-grand child. Mr. McKay had a large circle of friends and was well respected.
