Diamond Wedding. On Wednesday, Mr. and Mrs. Gottfried Nietschke, of Jacob's Creek, near Tanunda, celebrated the 60th anniversary of their wedding day. Mr. Nietschke, who is in his 89th year, was born at Lochow, Kreis Zullichau, Konigreich, Preussen, Germany, on July 12, 1823, and Mrs. Nietschke was born on November, 1833, in Grosstenz, near Laegnitz, Schlesien, Germany. With his parents , Mr. Nietschke left the Fatherland in the sailing vessel Zebra, Capt. Hahn—after whom the town of Hahndorf was named—and after a long and weary journey landed at Holdfast Bay on Commemoration Day, December 28, 1838. Mr. Nietschke found employment at the bakery firm of Messrs Bremen & Bauer, in Currie Street. He remembers that in 1840 the price of a 2lb loaf was 1/7, and flour was absolutely sold out with the exception of one bag which was bought at a very high price. A fresh supply, however, was available in two or three days as a boat arrived from America with flour from the American Flour Co. Mr. Nietschke spent about 7 years at the trade, and then, acting on medical advice, he left and settled at Jacob's Creek in company with the late Mr. G. Gramp. They purchased land opposite his present homestead, and a few years later another section was bought on the other side of Jacob's Creek on which Mr. Nietschke. now resides. The land at that time was very heavily timbered and hard work from early morning till late at night was the order of the day. Having cleared part of the land, wheat was sown, but not before many difficulties were overcome in preparing the land, as the ground had to be levelled and ploughed with the aid of oxen. Mr. Nietschke well remembers the funeral of Col. Light, which he at tended. Some years ago, when he went to Adelaide, he visited Light Square, where Col. Light's remains were laid. The late Mr. Giles, of the South Australian Land Coy., was also well known to him, and many others, including Lieut. George Gawler, then Governor of South Australia. It seems a pity that Mr. Nietschke has never attended the Glenelg Commemoration Day festival. He has always been a good supporter of the mission societies in many ways, and is a member of many years' standing of St, John's Church, Tanunda.- : He has also, been a lay-reader and is also a trustee of the church. His wife has been an excellent help meet to him. The children are Mrs. E. Kauffmann, Lyndoch; C. F. Nietschke, Jacob's Creek; C. H. Nietschke, Gnadenfrei ; R. Nietschke, Walkerville; Richard Nietschke, Koonunga; Mrs. A. Hasting, Denial Bay ; Mrs. W. Grocke, Tanunda ; and C. Nietschke, Perth, W.A. There are also about 50 grandchildren.
