HOLMES, Henry Born c1809 Manchester, England - Died 25 February 1865 at Angaston, SA Buried Plot 4, Angaston First Cemetery
Occupations of Farmer, Sawyer, Carpenter and Storekeeper
Henry and Mary Ann were from Manchester, and they travelled with their two young sons, Charles and Richard. Sadly, Richard died at sea, however another son, Henry, was born during the voyage. Upon arrival they stayed at Immigration Square (now the site of Adelaide High School) and their first Sunday dinner was kangaroo tail soup. Soon after Henry built a house in Gouger St, opposite what is now the Central Market. In 1843, Henry was engaged by George Fife Angas’s agent to build some of the first houses in Angaston. The family lived in Angaston, initially in an old shepherds hut until their house was completed. Three more children were born, Elizabeth, James and Mary Ann. Henry and his son Charles visited the Victorian Goldfields in 1852. Later the family purchased land and established a successful mixed farm near Angaston, called ‘Spring Farm’. Henry was a founding member of the Angaston Agricultural and Horticultural Society and won prizes for his wheat, barley, onions, turnips, bacon, ham, ducks and honey. He also served on the Angaston District Council. When Henry died in 1865, Mary Ann carried on the farm and garden with the aid of son Henry (Jnr). Later she sold the property and retired to Angaston.

Mr. HenryHolmes, of Spring Farm, died suddenly on Friday last; his remains were followed to the grave to-day by the largest concourse of mourners ever seen in this district. Mr. Holmes was about one of the first and most useful and enterprising settlers in the township of Angaston. He was a kind and benevolent friend, a patriotic man, and a sterling Christian—to see him was to like him; to know him, to esteem him. The Revds. Messrs. Bennett, Hannay, and Allen took part in the burial services. A funeral sermon will be preached next Sunday by the Rev. Mr. Bennett. South Australian Register Saturday 04 March 1865 page 3

HOLMES, Charles Frederick Born 01 February 1835 Manchester, England - Died 20 May 1911 at Angaston, SA
Occupations of Farmer and Carrier residing at Angaston and Adelaide. ANGASTON, May 23. — Mr. Charles Holmes, who died on Saturday night, had resided in this State for 72 years. He left Manchester with his parents in 1839 in the barque Lysander, and landed at Holdfast bay. In 1843 Mr. Holmes' father, in company with the late Mr. G. Watson, brought his family to Angaston and camped in Emigration Hut, which has just recently been pulled down to make room for the new railway-station. When about 22 years of age Mr Holmes started carting on the Adelaide road with a pair of bullocks and built up a large carrying business, in which he was actively interested until 1906, when he retired into private life giving over the management to his son. He and his wife celebrated their golden wedding about two years ago. He left a widow, one son (Mr. Walter Holmes), six daughters (Mrs. H. Marshall, Mrs. J. C. Swann, Mrs. C. Goodchild, Mrs. H. Yates, the Misses M. and E. Holmes) and a number of grand children. Chronicle Saturday 03 June 1911 page 43
The late Mr. Charles Holmes, whose death is referred' to in another column, was, in point of residence, Angaston's oldest inhabitant, and was one of the pioneers of the State, lie was born at Manchester, and in 1839 came to South Australia in the Lysander, commanded by Capt. Currie. His father went to Angaston and assisted in erecting the first house there. In 1843 the family removed to Angaston, and shared with others the building know as Emigration Hut. erected for the use of new settlers. This landmark was recently demolished to make room for the railway station. At that time there were only three buildings in Angaston. Mr. Holmes built a residence in pioneer style. For some years fanning was"carried on in a section rented from the late Mr. Angas, and in 1849 the father started store keeping at Barton, near to Truro, and his son assisted. On the opening of the gold fields in Victoria Mr. Charles Holmes joined a party for "Bendigo. "Six months later he returned by sea. The voyage occupied a fortnight. His father purchased a section of land south of Angaston. The son remained with him until he reached the age of 22, when he started carting to Adelaide and elsewhere on his own account with a team of bullocks. In 1862 he founded a regular carrying business, which developed into an extensive concern. In 1906 he retired from active work, and transferred the business to his son, Mr. W. B. Holmes. The deceased was a man of sterling character and highly esteemed. He was one of the original trustees of the Angaston Institute, founded in 1867, and retained the position until his death, he was also an active member of the Angaston Railway Committee. He took a deep interest in the erection of the new insitute, and subscribed liberally to the funds. He married, in 1859, a daughter of the late Mr. John Chapman, of Point Pass, and celebrated his golden wedding less than two years ago. His widow survives, besides one son (Mr. W. B. Holmes) and six daughters—Mrs. H. Marshall, Mrs. J. E. Swann (Angaston), Mrs. C. W. Goodchild (Eden Valley), Mrs. H. Yates (Angaston), and the Misses Holmes. Observer Saturday 27 May 1911 page 31
