Mr H. Lush, of Port Elliot, claimed to have been acquainted with that historic spot longer than any person present . "He arrivedinthe colony with his parents inthe ship Eden as a boy of six years of age and his reminiscences of life in the early days included many interesting events dating from Colonel Light's funeral, which he at tended," the report said. "When about eight years of age he got his first real experience of bush life, for, mounted behind his employer Mr Monteith, on horseback, he was taken to Gawler River to tend sheep in a district swarming with blacks. "In 1842, the family moved to Rapid Bay, which was then a wild and densely wooded locality A few years later another move was made to Waitpinga nearer the Bluff, but though his acquaintance with the interesting headland dates back into the forties, it was not until 1850 that he was actually engaged at the whale fishery there and soon after he saved the lives of two men who had been capsized on the reef at Wright's Island, from their fishing boat "Besides this work. he was also employed with Mr James Long --the last of the whalers — on pilot service between Victor Harbor and Port Klliot and on several occasions assisted disabled steamers off the Murray Mouth "On one occasion the schooner Storm bird, with 150 tons of flour on board, was seen to be bumping hard at her moorings off Port Elliot in very heavy weather and making signs for help. 'Lush and Long were able after great exertion to take her outside of the NobtRocks - now known as Pullen's Island "
